Continuing her very personal journey from a deeply religious Islamic upbringing to a post at Harvard, the brilliant, charismatic and controversial New York Times

Born in Mogadishu, Somalia, she grew up in Africa and the Middle East, before seeking asylum in the Netherlands, where she went on to become a member of parliament. From a book review in the New York Times:. Ayaan Hirsi Ali on Muslim Men and Western Women. By Jill Filipovic. Jill Filipovic is a journalist and the author of “OK Boomer, Let’s Talk: How My Generation Got Left Behind” and “The H-Spot: The Feminist Pursuit of Happiness.” 2021-02-09 · Hirsi Ali calls for a new feminist movement, one in which true feminists are “prepared to stand up for the rights of all women” and coalesce around the issue of “women’s safety from 2021-03-01 · Hirsi Ali argues throughout for liberal values—free speech, women’s rights and the rule of law—and concludes that: “we need a new women’s movement, one that views the world not in terms of multiculturalism and intersectionality but in universal terms and that, in the spirit of John Stuart and Harriet Taylor Mill, is prepared to stand up for the rights of all women. In what is sure to be her most controversial book to date, Ayaan Hirsi Ali makes a powerful case that a religious Reformation is the only way to end the terrorism, sectarian warfare, and repression of women and minorities that each year claim thousands of lives throughout the Muslim world. So a few days ago the New York Times Hirsi sharply attacked Ali and her new book, only to destroy it as soon as it was published.

Ayaan Hirsi Ali's book is packed with references to innumerable sources and seems to me to be thoroughly reliable. What surprises me is her desire to remain within Islam (albeit as a heretic) but to convince muslims in general that extensive reforms are necessary if Islam is not to continue to disintegrate into many warring factions which eliminate themselves.
